Clunes in the 1880’s

Looking towards Clunes township from The Rocks 1880s

The artist from the Illustrated Australian News chose ‘The Rocks’ (located above your current position) for this view.  This outcrop gave a panoramic vista and by this date, c. 1880’s, Fraser Street had been almost totally rebuilt with new banks, hotels and shops.

Poppet heads followed the quartz reefs and deep alluvial leads to South Clunes. Efforts by the council to eradicate the ravages of past mining meant that the creek banks were channelled and avenues of trees planted.

Gas lighting not only provided a well lit footbridge to the mines and homes at North Clunes but lit the showcases behind the new plate glass windows in Fraser street emporiums.

Sanitation was still poor, however, and at this date Creswick Creek still acted as an open effluent drain.
